The Sun and Its Shadows

First wet longer, now dry longer
As is well known, the spring months from March to May! were prominantly characteriz by low pressure areas with lots of clouds, frequent rain and occasionally strong winds. From around mid-May! several high pressure areas took over in succession. Just as the unstable and sometimes! cool weather conditions in spring had set in until around mid-May, the current general! weather situation has been going on for a while now and is likely to stay with us for the foreseeable! future.

For the past two weeks, Switzerland has! been on the southern ge of a high pressure zone over northwestern and northern! Europe in a dry bise current. This brought mostly stable and sunny weather to the northern side of the Alps. In the Alps and on the southern side of the Alps, there was a much wetter and unstable layer air mass. With the warming during! the day and at times also small! troughs at altitude, this was activat and caus a few showers! and sometimes strong thunderstorms. This meant that rain was constantly being provid from Ticino to the Alps and partly also in the foothills of the Alps. In the Jura and the Central Plateau, however, there was no precipitation – except temporarily around May 23rd – and the bise also had a drying effect.

This was particularly ideal for grass farming, as many farmers had to wait a long time for dry “hay weather” in the spring.

With the lack of precipitation in the north, the dryness in swen phone number library the top soil layer gradually increas again. The middle layers are still mostly benefiting from the abundant precipitation in spring, especially in those regions that receiv above-average amounts of precipitation (Alps and north-eastern Switzerland). In western and north-western Switzerland, however, there is currently a soil moisture deficit, partly because the spring precipitation totals were mostly below

average.

The platform for early detection of drought in Switzerland

drought.ch
also reports a runoff deficit for large parts of Switzerland, but still normal groundwater levels and spring runoff north of the Alps.

This website also provides a wealth of information, struggling to sales in japan including on current and possible impending droughts and water resource deficits.

Drought stress is a major problem for plants and is caus by a lack of water. It limits development and growth. The most obvious symptom is wilting. The plant closes the stomata in the leaves, thereby rucing awb directory evaporation. Leaves and shoots become limp and droop. The constant supply of water in spring meant that many plants were “spoil” and did not have to develop long roots. Now, during the current dry period, they can no longer access the moisture or water in the deeper layers of the soil.
