Christof Appenzeller is elected to the WMO Executive Board

The World Meteorological Congress (WMO) met in Geneva from May 22 to June 2. The Congress, the highest body of the organization, elect Abdulla Al Mandous (Unit Arab Emirates) as the new WMO President, as well as the three Vice Presidents Daouda Konate (Ivory Coast), Eoin Moran (Ireland) and Mrutyunjay Mohapatra (India). A new Secretary General, Celeste Saulo (Argentina), was also appoint. Finally, the Congress elect the 37 members of the Executive Board.

The Executive Board is responsible for implementing the decisions of the WMO Congress and is made up of the President of the WMO, the three Vice Presidents, the respective Presidents of the regional associations and 27 directors of national weather services. The Director of MeteoSwiss, Christof Appenzeller, was elect by the WMO Congress as one of 9 members in the European region. In addition to his personal qualifications, his election shows that Switzerland’s broad commitment to strengthening the organization is valu internationally.

As a host country, Switzerland tries to offer the organisation the best possible conditions. It also makes a significant contribution to WMO programmes and is involv in a wide range of WMO activities. One example of this is the
pilot project “Weather4UN”

which is currently being implement by MeteoSwiss

 

Through the project, Switzerland is taking on a key role in establishing a WMO coordination role to improve access to critical weather and climate information for the UN system and other humanitarian organizations. Initiative. In March 2022, UN Secretary-General António Guterres launch the initiative with the aim of protecting everyone worldwide from natural hazards with early warning systems by 2027. Guterres has task the WMO with taking the lead in implementing this key UN initiative.
